VILLASIMIUS (SU), 3,700 inhabitants

Vibrant marine colours, bright and crystal-clear waters, granite rocks, long stretches of sand, lagoons and green hills: Villasimius is the pearl of the south, a dreamlike tourist resort. Its coast is shaped as a “crown” of beaches, interspersed with small cliffs and the promontory of Capo Carbonara. Its Notteri pond is a famous habitat for pink flamingos and other rare bird species.

Its territory is also rich in history thanks to its ruins of the Nuragic age, the necropolis of Accu Is Traias (I century BC-III century AD) and Cruccuris (I-II AD), the Roman baths of Santa Maria, the first Phoenician-Punic and later Roman settlement of Cuccureddus as well as its archaeological museum. Here lies the statue of the Vergine del Mare (Virgin of the Sea), stemming from the “Cavoli” seabeds, a stunning work by Pinuccio Sciola. In her honour, every year at the end of July the Festa della Madonna del Naufragio (Festival of Our Lady of the Shipwreck) is celebrated with a suggestive procession on the shoreline.

TORTOLÌ (NU), 12,000 inhabitants

In the heart of Ogliastra, the municipality of Tortolì is located in a Sardinian plain that extends towards the township of Arbatax nearby breathtaking maritime landscapes with red porphyry cliffs and white beaches. Here the Batteria Park, a “green lung” on a promontory, still hosts skeletons of anti-aircraft and naval battalions. This territory is known as the Blue Zone due to the longevity of its inhabitants, ranking among the highest in the world thanks to its “genetics”, “nature/environment” and “eating well and healthy” variables. “Su Logu de s‘Iscultura”, the open-air Contemporary Art Museum along the streets of the citadel is definitely worth visiting.
