The “Villasimius – Tortolì” second stage of Giro d’Italia Donne’s 33^rd Edition is just concluded

At her first Giro, the world champion conquers the Pink Jersey; on her shoulders lie the Cyclamen and Blue Jersey as well; second place for Marianne Vos, third ranking is Charlotte Kool. 5 Italian cyclists in the Top 10.

Tortolì, 1^st July 2022 – The “multi-coloured” Elisa Balsamo (TREK SEGAFREDO) owns the first photo-finish in Tortolì with an exciting final blitz, the arrival point for the second stage of Giro Donne 2022. The race started in Villasimius, the first challenge after yesterday’s individual time trial in Cagliari. The world champion, competing in her first Giro Donne, wins the Pink Jersey, together with Cyclamen and confirming her Blue Jersey, conquering the stage with 2:39:13 on a 106.5-km route. The previous stage victory of an Italian cyclist in Giro Donne was in 2020 (Stage 8).

Right behind her is Marianne Vos (TEAM JUMBO-VISMA), third ranking is Charlotte Kool (Team DSM). 5 Italian athletes in the Top 10: together with Balsamo, Chiara Consonni (VALCAR TRAVEL & SERVICE) ranking fifth, Rachele Barbieri (SERVETTO – MAKHYMO – BELTRAMI TSA) at the sixth place, Marta Bastianelli (UAE TEAM ADQ) eighth ranker, and finally Silvia Zanardi (BEPINK) placed ninth.

Cyclamen Jersey goes on Franziska Brauße’s shoulders from CERATIZIT – WNT PRO CYCLING TEAM, awarded with the first Mountain Grand Prix of this edition (Fourth-category in Castiadas) and protagonist of the first accelleration at km 5.5 together with Neve Bradbury (CANYON//SRAM RACING).

From the 26^th km we saw another remarkable fugue by Francesca Baroni (AROMITALIA BASSO BIKES VAIANO), Matilde Vitillo (BEPINK) and Cristina Tonetti (TOP GIRLS FASSA BORTOLO); these three athletes were then caught up at km 58 by Inga Češulienė (AROMITALIA BASSO BIKES VAIANO), Beatrice Rossato (ISOLMANT – PREMAC – VITTORIA), Francesca Pisciali (TEAM MENDELSPECK) and Marta Jaskulska (LIV RACING XSTRA) winning the “Traguardo Volante” (flying finish line) at km 74.1 in Tertenia and owning the White Jersey. The six cyclists then set the rhythm of the race and were later caught up by the rest of the contestants around 9 km before the arrival point.

Isotta Barbieri (SERVETTO – MAKHYMO – BELTRAMI TSA) retired from the race.

Pink Jersey Elisa Balsamo declares: “Wearing the Pink Jersey is a dream come true, wearing it tomorrow will be awesome. We came here with the goal of not wasting too many seconds in the prologue in order to then attempt to win the Jersey with the time bonuses. Couldn’t go better than this! Today the team was majestic, we took responsibility from the first to the last km. Tomorrow we will try to defend the title but we don’t have too much pressure on us, as today we achieved what we aimed for”.

Tomorrow, Saturday 2^nd July, Giro Donne carries on with the last Sardinian stage before the one-day break allowing the caravan to transfer to the mainland and to continue the race on July 4^th in Emilia-Romagna.

The start of the “Cala Gonone (Dorgali) – Olbia” stage is scheduled at 10:45 am, a 113.4 km long trial, after 7 hairpin turns from Cala Gonone to the km 0 in Dorgali, kicks-off atfull-speedwith a 21.3 km downward slope beginning at 449 m altitude ending in Orosei at 36 m above sea level. From here on, the race continues with over 90 km of continuous ups and downs along the territories of the Siniscola, Tanaunella and Budoni municipalities (where a “flying finishing line” is set at km 72.5), as well as of San Teodoro, Monte Petrosu and Loiri Porto San Paolo between the Noro and Sassari provinces. The route thus flanks the Tyrrhenian Sea and crosses the Posada and Cedrino rivers, before arriving in Olbia and passing right over the international airport, finally entering the heart of the city to cut through the finishing line placed close to the urban park Fausto Noce. The arrival time is scheduled at h 2:15 pm.
