SARNICO (BG), 6,800 inhabitants

Sarnico, the “shining gem of Sebino”, is located at the south-western end of Lake Iseo, between the provinces of Brescia and Bergamo. Sarnico is an important tourist spot, famous for its sandstone. In more recent times the city has seen its name associated with motor boating, thanks to the renowned Riva shipyards, still producing what have always been considered the most beautiful boats in the world, a synonym of elegance and perfection. Home of the splendid Liberty-style villas and the G. Sommaruga Mausoleum, Sarnico borders the Calepio Valley, where the town of Grumello del Monte town is located. Grumello del Monte stands out for the ancient rampart of the Gonzaga Castle and the Parish Church dedicated to the Holy Trinity built in 1720 on a project by G. Battista Caniana, with sculptures by A. Fantoni.

BERGAMO, 120,165 inhabitants

Bergamo, surrounded by the imposing Venetian Walls (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), has a mediaeval heart perched on the hill. The ancient soul of Bergamo Alta (“high Bergamo”) is preserved by ancient Roman remains, narrow mediaeval cobbled streets, Renaissance churches, Eighteenth-century buildings and neoclassical facades. Bergamo gave birth to Donizetti, one of the five worldwide acclaimed opera composers. His heritage can be experienced at his native house as well as at the Museo Donizettiano (Donizetti Museum), while his tomb lies in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the city theatre is named after him. The city also shines through the artistic masterpieces by Botticelli, Mantegna, Bellini and Raffaello: the Masters’ legacy can be found in the halls of the Carrara Academy, an art gallery hosting one of the most important European collections of Italian Renaissance works. On the other hand, Bergamo Bassa (“low Bergamo”) harbours the Gamec contemporary art gallery and its Sentierone, a famous walk among locals. Culinary culture  is also meaningful in Bergamo, with  its iconic “casoncelli” (main first course of the local cuisine), as many as 9 D.O.P. cheeses, cold cuts, excellent wines and typical traditional recipes.
