Cesena, 4th July 2022 – Annemiek van Vleuten (MOVISTAR TEAM WOMEN) prevails in Cesena in the first challenge for climbers: the Dutch athlete, among the favourites on the eve, wins the fourth stage of Giro Donne 2022, the Cesena – Cesena trial (120.9 km long) with a 3:13:13 time. Right behind her is Mavi Garcia Cañellas (UAE TEAM ADQ), new Green Jersey, and Marta Cavalli (FDJ NOUVELLE-AQUITAINE FUTUROSCOPE), new Blue Jersey ranking third at 43’’. Their fugue started at km 73. The Cyclamen Jersey stays on Elisa Balsamo’s shoulders (TREK SEGAFREDO), while the White Jersey goes to Niamh Fisher-Black (SD WORX).
Annemiek van Vleuten, born in 1982, two-times winner of Giro Donne (2018 and 2019), brings the overall count of stage-victories in the competition to 12.
4 Italian cyclists in the Top 10: besides Marta Cavalli, fourth place goes to Silvia Persico (VALCAR TRAVEL & SERVICE), sixth place for Elisa Longo Borghini (TREK SEGAFREDO) and Erica Magnaldi (UAE TEAM ADQ) ranks eighth.
The stage winner Annemiek van Vleuten declares: “Coming back to Giro is amazing. It was painful not participating last year, as I was preparing for the Olympics. Likewise, it’s awesome to win with the jersey of my new team, Movistar, it’s a new challenge. Now I will face the next stages day by day, better not plan too much. I knew I could prove myself in this really hard stage, even if when I checked the routes I thought this was not the most frightening stage. I believe it has been a wonderful race, even for our audience watching it on TV”.
Evita Muzic (FDJ NOUVELLE-AQUITAINE FUTUROSCOPE) conquered the first 3rd-tier Mountain Grand Prix in Bertinoro at 217-metre altitude at km 39.1, while Mavi Garcia Cañellas (UAE TEAM ADQ) won both the 2nd-tier MGP at Colle del Barbotto at km 74.2 (515 m altitude) and the 3-rd tier MGP at Monteleone at 97.5 km (355 m altitude). At km 28 Franziska Brauße (CERATIZIT – WNT PRO CYCLING TEAM) sprinted up to km 34.8 crossing the Traguardo Volante (flying finish line) in Bertinoro.
Wilma Olausson (UNO-X PRO CYCLING TEAM) withdrew from the race.
Tomorrow Tuesday 5th July the challenges in Emilia-Romagna end with 126.1 km of the “Carpi – Reggio Emilia” stage. A race dedicated to sprinters, the longest of this edition, starting at h 11.00 am and touching the municipalities of Campogalliano, San Martino in Rio, Correggio, Campagnola Emilia and Poviglio. The “traguardo volante” (flying finish line) is set at km 63.6 and the route does not feature any slope up to this point. At km 80 the plane interrupts and a climb starts, leading to the first Apennine elevations around Bibbiano, Montecavolo, Albinea and Fogliano before entering in Reggio Emilia to cross the finish line placed right next to Parco del Popolo. The stage thus runs through small-to-medium Aemilian settlements, passing through the vast farming lands which give life to the great eno-gastronomic tradition of the Region. The arrival time is estimated around 2:15 pm.
