ABANO TERME (PD), 20,000 inhabitants
Abano has been known for its thermal baths since Roman times, a meaningful heritage still visible today thanks to its archaeological area. Today it is considered the most important spa in Europe and among the oldest in the world. This recognition arises from a cutting-edge therapeutic quality of its waters and its thermal muds. Immersed in the Euganean Hills, Abano Terme is also famous for its historical palaces, its art and culture immersed in a natural heritage of peace and beauty. Moreover, the city and its territory represent a microcosm of food-and-wine excellences that match the hospitality of its farmhouses and to the inventiveness of Euganean cuisine. Abano Terme is finally an ideal destination for the psycho-physical preparation of athletes thanks to its thermal waters, the verdant surroundings and its therapeutic establishments.
PADUA (PD), 209,111 inhabitants
History, culture, art, spirituality and sport: Padua hosts many souls. According to legend, it was founded by the mythical Antenore escaping from the destruction of Troy. The city is a crossroads between waterways and overland routes in the heart of Veneto, a place for trade and gathering since ancient times. The prestigious University, celebrating its 800th anniversary in 2022, is the heart of the city’s cultural ferment, attracting over the centuries not only illustrious scientists such as Galileo Galilei but also great artists such as Giotto and many others who have left their mark in Padua with their artworks.
So much so that recently UNESCO recognized Urbs Picta Padovana (the great cycles of Fourteenth-century frescoes) as a World Heritage Site. Many of these masterpieces enrich sacred sites: pilgrim destinations from all over the world, like those who visit the Basilica del Santo dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. It is also a city devoted to sports, with the first municipal sporting facility in Italy, dedicated to the footballer and aviation star Giovanni Monti, now housing the renovated velodrome. A bond sealed by the title of European City of Sport for 2023.
