Olbia, 2^nd July 2022 – Another final blitz at Giro Donne 2022 proclaims the victor of this stage: after yesterday’s second place Marianne Vos (TEAM JUMBO-VISMA) redeems herself and cuts the finish line at 2:48:22. Second ranker is Charlotte Kool (Team DSM), while the third position and third consecutive podium goes to Elisa Balsamo (TREK SEGAFREDO), keeping the Pink Jersey on her shoulders together with the Cyclamen and Blue ones. The third stage of Giro Donne 2022, Cala Gonone (Dorgali) – Olbia, therefore crowns the same athletes as yesterday, albeit in different order.

Marianne Vos, previous winner of three Giro Donne (2011, 2012 and 2014) today sets another absolute record winning 31 stages overall in the competition.

Yet again 5 Italian athletes in the Top 10: fourth-ranking Rachele Barbieri (SERVETTO – MAKHYMO – BELTRAMI TSA), fifth-ranking Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE TEAM ADQ), eighth-ranking Silvia Zanardi (BEPINK), and Chiara Consonni ranking tenth (VALCAR TRAVEL & SERVICE).

Stage winner Marianne Vos declares: “Obviously, it’s a redemption. We knew there could be good chances of victory, the team led me to the perfect spot, although it was hard to keep head-lining in such a technical final blitz. Today I’m really glad. Now we travel to the mainland, it’s the first time there’s a rest day during Giro Donne. I will enjoy the victory, let’s see what opportunities the next days have in store for us”.

Franziska Brauße (CERATIZIT – WNT PRO CYCLING TEAM) defends her Green Jersey, while the White goes to Franziska Koch (Team DSM).

Today the cyclist conquering the Traguardo Volante (flying finishing line) in Budoni at km 72.5 is Asia Zontone (ISOLMANT – PREMAC – VITTORIA), protagonist of a 39-km fugue alongside Markéta Hájková (BEPINK) and Alice Palazzi (TOP GIRLS FASSA BORTOLO), then caught up by Alessia Vigilia (TOP GIRLS FASSA BORTOLO) and Katia Ragusa (LIV RACING XSTRA). At 10 km before the arrival, only Ragusa and Vigilia resist against the main bunch, but they are eventually caught up at -7 km.

Olivia Baril (VALCAR TRAVEL & SERVICE) and Viktoriia Melnychuk (SERVETTO – MAKHYMO – BELTRAMI TSA) withdrew from today’s race.

After a day of rest allowing the caravan to travel to the mainland, Giro Donne resumes on Monday 4^th July with its first stage in Emilia-Romagna, the “Cesena – Cesena” race. The trial is 120.9 km long, starting and ending in Cesena, with the finish line right next to the evocative Parco della Rimembranza (Remembrance Park) surrounding the Rocca Malatestiana (Malatestian Stronghold). This stage sets off the beginning of the challenges for climbers: after passing through the municipalities of Castiglione di Ravenna and Forlimpopoli, the cyclists will face a 217-metre altitude 3rd-tier Mountain Grand Prix at km 39.1 in Bertinoro (birthplace of the Italian cycling champion Arnaldo Pambianco). The route then follows on with two 2nd-tier Mountain Grand Prix in Colle del Barbotto (515 m altitude) and in Monteleone (355 m altitude) at km 74.2 and 97.5 respectively. A truly demanding challenge flanking long stretches of the Savio river then entering the Apennine valley of the same name in the south. The arrival time is estimated around h 3:30 pm.
